The Actor’s Voice

(Schools Workshop)

An actor's most powerful tool for expression is their voice.

Training the actor's voice gives them access to all of the colours of their voice on demand.
Because 'natural' is what your practice

This workshop lets young actors experience all of the ways their voice can communicate their inner life.

They integrate vocal science to see, hear and feel the shifts that create memorable characters and powerful acting moments.

It gives them the tools ahead of time, so that when they are performing they have access to a much wider range of vocal options.

Because here’s the hot take: No amount of emotion or feeling is going to make muscle do something it doesn’t know how to do. And forcing students through this process is not only unfair, but can be traumatic, and lead to the story of “I have a bad voice”.

“Everyone has a beautiful voice… you just need to learn how to use it!”
– Jo Estill

Yes, tone deafness is a real medical condition – but it is much, much more rare than most people think. In the workshop we demonstrate the difference between being tone deaf and simply lacking confidence in matching pitch (which is a much more common and easily improved challenge).

In this inspiring 3-hour workshop we'll explore three key skills for singing without fear:

Hearing & Matching Pitch

So that you know you are singing in tune.

Vocal Production

So you can let your voice soar. Get the sounds in your head out into the world. Learn world class tools for range, volume and tone.

Confidence and Mindset

Myth busting, practice strategies and overcoming performance anxiety.

All you need to bring are your questions and a positive attitude.

No one will be required to sing on their own, or be put in any kind of embarrassing or stressful situation.

There will be an opportunity for a short live coaching in front of the group at the end of the workshop for any volunteers who would like to take this up, but this is completely voluntary.

Meet The Teacher

Hi there, I'm Scot!

For most days of the year I help New Zealand performers develop world-class performance skills so that they can go from musical theatre super-fans to emerging professionals.

But every Summer I get to bring back one of my absolute favourite workshops: Singing for Non Singers.

You see, I feel very blessed to have been able to share my voice with audiences up and down the country over the last 10 years - in national tours, musical productions and concerts. I've sung dream roles like Javert in Les Miserables and Mr Banks in Mary Poppins and created original characters in NZ premiers. Its been my childhood dream come true.

But it wasn't always that way. I'm not exactly what you'd call a 'natural singer' (we'll talk about that fraught terminology in the workshop!)

When I was about 13 I had a massive wobble in my voice and I couldn't work out how to stop singing out of tune at the end of each line!

It's been a journey getting from there to here, and truly learning how my voice and the voices of those around me work.

Now, using a combination of proven teaching tools, world-class information (influenced strongly by the Estill Voice Model), and insights from teaching over 10, 000 private lessons (what!?!) I get to help others who feel like they aren't 'natural singers' move from shame to vocal confidence.

Because singing is a human right.

My Teaching Philosophy:

  1. Always praise, never lie.
  2. Kindness first.
  3. Everyone has a beautiful voice.

Frances

Really enjoyed Singing for non-singers.

I've been doing my 20 minutes each day and fancy that I can notice some improvement already.

Looking forward to getting your follow up email with the notes.

Just want to tell you how much I enjoyed the workshop on Sunday! It was so much fun, exciting and affirming.
I have to say I was so excited about it that I sang all the way home! and then at church in the evening I opened my mouth and sound DID come out!

Whoever I talk to about your workshop wished that they had gone too!  So if you want to do another workshop some time you’ll fill it quickly too.

You have such a gift and are an amazing teacher.

Colleen

Hi Scot, thank you for the wonderful workshop last Sunday. I do believe I can sing. I get around the house singing all the time now.

Dianne

Many thanks Scot for Sunday workshop.    I really enjoyed the time I spent with you.   I will certainly be going to the Phantom of the Opera to see you!

What is the name of the female choir that is looking for new members?

Summer

Just wanted to thank you again for such an awesome time.

My Nan and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Margaret

I attended the 11.00-2.00 workshop on Sunday and want to thank you so much for your commitment of time and energy.  I was very nervous but felt immediately at ease with you and thoroughly enjoyed the day, having lots of fun and gaining confidence to try to sing.

You are a wonderful teacher!

I am having a serious discussion with that ‘can’t, you’re no good’ voice in the back of my head and when I’ve shut it up a bit more I will be in touch to talk about the possibility of lessons as I know that if I don’t I’ll always regret not learning to sing.

Everyone has a beautiful voice,

You just have to learn how to use it.
